In June of 2004, the U.S. Army and Air Force Strategic Sourcing Programs launched a joint team to identify potential mutual benefits and opportunities within the cellular Wireless Handheld Services/Devices commodity area.The team identified a number of improvement opportunities across the Army and Air Force.The team also identified several issues that included:
Multiple agreements across Contractors
Inconsistent pricing, terms and conditions
Lack of spend and life-cycle management and operations optimization at the Enterprise level
High overhead and administration costs for the Army and Air Force and also the Contractors
The Government is establishing a single enterprise-wide agreement with each major supplier of wireless services and devices that addresses these issues and creates joint process efficiencies for both the Government and providers of wireless products and airtime services.
